Error when trying to format SD card
Added by Daniel Alsace almost 6 years ago
It displays the message which propose to format the sd as external storage or as internal storage, I tested both but more external, it crashs when it displays 20% formatting.
My SD card is a new verbatim, I formatted it in my computer two times

Hello Daniel,
Thanks for using Replicant and for telling us about this issue that you are having.
Did you try both ext4 and FAT32?
What device are you using?

It seems that androïd made awful what is cristal clear with regular linux distributions (gksudo gparted, fat32, and it's recognized by any file manager!)
I tried to format with computer in both ext4 and FAT32 formats (when trying to put sd card with ext4 in phone, it says that filesystem is corrupted!! and then fails to format)
I tried with gparted to delete the partition in order to have "nothing", the phone has the same error.
I'm using the samsung galaxy s3 i9300.
Here's the error message:
command '8 volume partition disk:179_16 public' failed with 'null'

Have you tried saying "no" when asked by Replicant to format the SD card?
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Daniel Alsace almost 6 years ago
It seems there is no possibility to say no!

Hello Daniel,
I'm sorry for the trouble you are having. Can you try formatting the SDcard as exFAT to see if the message still comes up?
It looks like this solution might have worked for other Replicant users.
Here's instructions on how to do it in Replicant without using GNU/Linux: https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1798#note-7

I tried with exfat:
sudo mkfs.exfat /dev/mmcblk0
The phone says the SD card is corrupted, and then shows the same error when trying to format.
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Kurtis Hanna almost 6 years ago
Hello Daniel,
Can you try this command instead?
mkfs.exfat /dev/block/vold/public\:179_11
As I mentioned earlier, this was recommended here: https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1798#note-7

ok, sorry.
It doesn't work:
root@i9300:/data # mkfs.exfat /dev/block/vold/public\:179_16
mkexfatfs 1.2.3

Androïd is such a strange bloatware!
I put in the phone the SD card which was used to install replicant (which was a little bit used), and it works!
I will take it for the phone (transfer all datas), and take the verbatim for the computer.
It's really strange!
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Kurtis Hanna almost 6 years ago
That is strange. I'm glad it worked out in the end for you, though! Thanks for responding to the thread to let us know what ended up happening!

I lost my data some time ago, because of bad usage (superFreezz app which could speed up a little bit this OS, but looks like bad thing…) and did factory reset, it gave like a new replicant install.
But now the problems with sd card are back :(
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Kurtis Hanna over 5 years ago
Sorry to hear that Daniel! Similar problem happening over here: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/15356?r=15359
I'll try to replicate this issue locally in the near future.
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Daniel Alsace over 5 years ago
I used the SD card to install replicant on some other device, thus formatted it with gparted to fat32, put the zip on it.
The SD port on the other device seemed to be out of order.
But when I put again this SD card on my phone with replicant, it works!
I must use it and wait if in the future I'll see problems again…!
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Daniel Alsace over 5 years ago
It worked some days, but it started again to say the memory is corrupted, to ask to format, and when we format it further ask again to format because it's corrupted, not configurated…
When these problems occurs, bootup take a lot more time, when I remove sd card the bootup is normal,

Can you confirm that you tried these instructions and they didn't work? https://redmine.replicant.us/attachments/1500
RE: Error when trying to format SD card - Added by Daniel Alsace about 5 years ago
It's working, for now.
The problem was probably due to electronic failure of the SIM/SD tray. It was replaced.
