installed replicant yesterday on a gsm galaxy nexus - wifi does not appear to be working -
is this normal ? thanks

Yes, it is normal. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do not work on any Replicant devices, because they require proprietary software to run. We are a free software project, and do not distribute any proprietary software.

Android is built as a very static system and doesn't extend well to external devices, so it's hard to know whether it will autoconfigure the interface.
However, you can always configure the interface through command line, then it should work, provided that the ethernet to USB dongle has a kernel driver that is built with the Replicant kernel. If not, you can build the driver as a module (if only it exists).
